Caregivers need support to give with compassion. February 21st, 2025, is National Caregivers Day which was initiated in 2015 by The Provider’s Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies. This day is dedicated to honoring caregivers of all types including family and friends, professional caregivers, and others who offer help with tasks of daily living to those living with chronic or acute health conditions.
Sometimes caregiving can be an invisible and thankless job. Care partnering is a critical role but is often emotionally and physically exhausting and can lead to burnout and illness. This specific partnering situation can also be an enormous strain on relationships. While caring for someone can be a fulfilling expression of love and partnership, it can also lead to resentments, conflict, and high levels of stress.
Some people in care partnering situations and are well suited to the role, while others struggle greatly with their responsibilities and have limited alternatives.
Paying close attention not only to the person needing assistance, but their care partner’s needs as well can be the support that restores the care partner’s energy to keep going with kindness and compassion.
